Under section 62 of the State Records Act 2000 the State Records Commission established the State Records Advisory Committee (SRAC) to advise it about State records that should be State archives, the retention periods for those State records that are not to be State archives, and associated matters.
The Committee reviews Retention and Disposal Schedules (the retention and disposal component of the Recordkeeping Plan) and Ad Hoc Disposal Authorities submitted by government organizations. The Committee may also review General Disposal Authorites and Sector Disposal Authorities produced by the State Records Office.
Disposal recommendations passed by the Committee are forwarded to the State Records Commission for approval.
Membership of the Committee includes "representatives from the Public Service and bodies concerned with record keeping", as stipulated in the Act. Members and deputies are appointed to the Committee for a term of 3 years.
