Who do we think we are?

Hollywood came to the SRO in September with the crew from SBS hit series Who Do You Think You Are spotted in the Search Room and behind-the-scenes in the archives stacks filming two episodes for its upcoming series, to be released in the first half of 2012

Senior Archivist Damien Hassan and Archives Officer Tim Lethorn are set to feature alongside two Australian celebrities in stories with strong West Australian connections. While greasepaint and television lights are not archivally friendly, Damien and Tim did make sure white gloves were in evidence and the precious archives being shared with each celebrity were treated with appropriate care. Bound to secrecy over the identity of the celebrities featured by Who Do You Think You Are and unable to publicly divulge the details of the surprising and fascinating stories uncovered in the archives, Damien was able to comment:

“My celebrity was genuinely shocked and amazed at the story told about her family through the archives. There is a real twist to this story which the episode will reveal. People are constantly surprised that State archives can contain such personal and detailed insights into the daily lives of ordinary people.”

Tim added: “The celebrity I dealt with was delighted with what was found in the archives. As is so often the case with archival research, we were able to follow unexpected twists and turns to reveal a fascinating insight into his family story. Filming was a bit of a trial, but my celebrity did his best to put me at ease.”

While Damien and Tim are not going to give up their day jobs just yet, we are all looking forward to seeing their talents grace the small screen. And of course, if you are interested in tracing your own family tree, SRO’s knowledgeable staff will be happy to get you started.
