The Search Room
The State Records Office operates a Search Room on the Ground Floor of the Alexander Library Building where the public may access State archives.
Entry to the Search Room is available by the external door facing onto James Street in the South-West corner of the building or by going through the Arts and Literature Library (see map).
The Search Room contains computer terminals to access AEON (the State Records Office's online archives database), a complete set of the Series Registration System (SRS) and Archive Note (AN) files to assist researchers to locate material within the collection. Clients can help themselves to a selection of other useful finding aids located on the shelves of the Search Room, including original volumes of the Colonial Secretary's Office file registers and indexes.
Desks are equipped with power points for researchers who wish to use laptop computers.
When using the Search Room clients are asked to observe the following conditions:
- No food or drink is to be consumed in the Search Room.
- Pencils only may be used in the Search Room.
- Noise should be kept to a minimum.
- No bags are allowed within the Search Room.
- Mobile Phones must be turned off before entering the Search Room.
If clients wish to use original materials, they must apply for a Research Ticket and comply with the Conditions for the Use of Archival Records.
A retrieval slip must be completed for each item of original material requested. There are 3 retrievals per day. See also further information on retrieval times and procedures.
